Trump Accounts: How the New Child Savings Program Works in 2026

Today, July 1, 2026, I spent a couple of hours on an IRS webinar to gain clarity on the latest guidance on Trump Accounts. Below, we will look at this new child savings initiative, who qualifies, key dates, and what families should know before signing up.

What Are Trump Accounts?

“Trump Accounts” are a new federal, tax-advantaged savings vehicle designed to help families build long-term savings for children. Announced during Donald Trump’s second term, the program combines elements of college savings, retirement-style tax benefits, and automatic “seed” money from the federal government for eligible children. The idea is to give every eligible child a starter nest egg and a simple way for families to contribute over time.

Trump Accounts officially open for contributions on July 4, 2026. If you have elected to open an account using form 4547, you may have already seen an email from [email protected]. If not, monitor your email closely because that should be coming to your inbox soon. The authorized individual should follow the email instructions to activate the child's Trump Account.

Who Is Eligible and What Do Children Receive?

Eligibility is based primarily on a child’s date of birth. All children under the age of 18 are eligible as long as they have a social security number and have not attained age 18 before the close of the calendar year in which the election is made. Under the pilot program, children born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028 may qualify for a federal “seed” contribution. For each eligible child, the Treasury will deposit a $1,000 starter amount once the account is activated and all required information is verified ( IRS guidance ).

Families themselves can then add contributions of up to $5,000 per year, indexed for inflation after 2027. In addition, an employer can contribute up to $2,500 per employee toward an employee's or an employee's dependent's Trump Account without it counting as taxable income for the employee. During the growth period, withdrawals cannot be made. Once the child reaches age 18, the account is then generally treated as a traditional IRA account.

Key Dates: When Can You Start Using Trump Accounts?

  • Program launch: Contributions and official activations begin July 4, 2026. Before this date, you cannot legally fund a Trump Account, even if you’ve pre-registered.

  • Birth window: Children must be born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028 to qualify for the $1,000 federal seed deposit under the current rules.

  • Sign-ups so far: By January 2026, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reported around 1 million pre-registrations, helped along by high-profile promotion, including a White House summit appearance by rapper Nicki Minaj (Fox Business reporting).

“Fostering the Future” Accounts for Children in Foster Care

A notable extension of the program is Fostering the Future Accounts, announced on June 11, 2026, by First Lady Melania Trump and Treasury Secretary Bessent. These accounts mirror the structure of Trump Accounts but are tailored for children in foster care. Foster children will also be eligible for the $1,000 starter deposit, with contributions beginning on July 4, 2026—the same day the broader program launches ( AP News ).

Advocates for foster youth have long argued that children in the system rarely receive the financial head start many of their peers enjoy. By guaranteeing an account and initial funding, Fostering the Future Accounts aim to narrow this gap and provide a small but meaningful base of savings when young people age out of care.

Fostering the Future Accounts extend the same $1,000 seed to foster youth.

How Trump Accounts Compare to Other Savings Options

Online communities like Bogleheads and Reddit’s personal finance forums have already begun comparing Trump Accounts to 529 college plans, Roth IRAs, and taxable brokerage accounts. While detailed IRS rules are still emerging, a few themes keep coming up in these discussions:

  • The $1,000 federal seed is a unique advantage that other account types do not offer.

  • Potential tax benefits could make Trump Accounts a useful complement rather than a replacement for existing education or investment vehicles.

  • Some savers are considering a “both-and” strategy: funding Trump Accounts up to the match or tax-advantaged limit, then using 529s or other tools for additional goals.

💡 Pro Tip: Before shifting money from an existing 529 or brokerage account, talk with a qualified financial planner. The rules on withdrawals, taxes, and permitted uses may differ from what you’re used to.

Spotting Scams and Using Only Official Trump Account Channels

Whenever a new federal program launches, scammers follow. In mid‑2026, Reddit users began reporting suspicious “early activation” emails and websites claiming to offer priority access to Trump Accounts. Community moderators and personal finance experts have stressed that legitimate communications will come only from official Treasury channels, including the [email protected] email domain.

If you receive a message asking for Social Security numbers, banking details, or upfront “processing fees” from any other address, treat it as a red flag. Go directly to the official Treasury website or call a verified government hotline rather than clicking links in unsolicited emails or social media posts.

⚠️ Warning: Trump Accounts cannot be funded before July 4, 2026. Anyone promising early deposits or “special access” is almost certainly attempting fraud.

The Bottom Line on Trump Accounts

Trump Accounts represent a significant new federal effort to encourage child savings—anchored by a $1,000 government-funded seed. If your child qualifies for the pilot program, it's a good idea to establish an account and take advantage of the seed money. Even if your child doesn't qualify for the seed money, this is an excellent way to set your child up for a good financial head start. I also expect employers to jump on board with making contributions to accounts, which is a great way to reduce taxable income.

By focusing on official information, watching for scams, and coordinating Trump Accounts with your broader financial strategy, you can decide whether this new tool deserves a place in your child’s financial future.
